Retro chums, I want to know what your favourite horror games from 1980 - 2004 are, especially if I might not have heard of them.

(Looking to my Amiga & ST peeps here in particular.)

    Mine include:

    • Gabriel Knight: The Sins of the Fathers
    • Elvira: Mistress of the Dark
    • I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream
    • Quake
    • Killing Time
    • Veil of Darkness
    • Silent Hill
    • Resident Evil
    • American McGee's Alice
    • Zombi (1986)
    • Bloodnet (for its premise - the protag is sadly a fuckboy, and not in particularly tolarable way)
    • Shadowgate (I am very bad at this game)

Genre cross-overs welcome, I considered putting Alien Breed: Tower Assault in this list. Might Ultima VIII: Pagan count?

@lpl Flash games count if they're from before the cut-off, but I'll need its name!

@HauntedOwlbear does that flash game with the maze and the jump scare count?

@HauntedOwlbear I learned long ago that horror games as a genre tend not to interest me much. The big exception to this is Eternal Darkness (released in 2002), which I loved at the time and still have heaps of nostalgia for. It just does so many weird and creative things to make it stand out from the crowd, both mechanically and in storytelling style.

@HauntedOwlbear I still like to mention Friday the 13th that, despite being a quite awful game, still had so many interesting mechanics for an adventure title for home computers in 1985 (sanity meter, the first jumpscare in gaming etc)

@damianogerli I had a copy of that for my Famiclone as a kid, and I actually really liked the sense of place it create.

@HauntedOwlbear you're talking about the NES game I think? I was referencing the older game made for C64, ZX Spectrum and CPC. Wrote about it here: https://genesistemple.com/quirky-weird-c64-friday-the-13th-losing-your-head-to-8-bit

@bestiaexmachina Sodding Dark Seed scarred me for life, and it was definitely the timer rather than the horror that did it. (Absolutely dripping with atmosphere, though.)

Need to try Sanitarium, which looks very much my bag.

I maybe want to write about these, and I'm kind of uncomfortable about Phantasmagoria's slur-name cat, of all things.

(Which is somehow worse for me by a significant measure than the rape, misogyny and fatphobia, because at least those were somewhat signposted and expected!)

@HauntedOwlbear You already have some of my favorites on there! Here's a few more that might fit:

      – Sanitarium
      – Phantasmagoria
      – Dark Seed (personally I prefer Dark Seed II, as the 1st one has a timer and I hate timers)

@HauntedOwlbear This game had many versions, I was semi-joking 🙈 mouse pointer maze that forced you real close to the screen and than prompted a jump scare

@bestiaexmachina Oh, it's a great suggestion, and one I'm still thinking about including, having written a few hundred words (and a bunch of content warnings) about it!

The core of the problem is that I gather the the s-word disability slur isn't regarded as a slur at all in the US, but for British English speakers it's really bad.

@HauntedOwlbear Oh dear! I don't remember that at all – it's been almost a decade since I played it, and all that stuck with me was the really cool atmosphere. Apologies, and feel free to disregard my suggestion, then. Maybe some things are better left to vanish into obscurity. 😉

Honestly, this horror games thing (I'm writing a Halloween special) has very much been a personal journey of "your faves are problematic". (And these are all personal faves, I'm not just knocking them for their own sake.)

Blood Omen: The Legacy of Kain was going to be here but is no longer even on my list (because I can't currently stand to look at it due to this mess https://eldritch.cafe/@HauntedOwlbear/112568940656212305)

GK1 has some... interesting ideas about voodoo. The factual research is pretty solid, but Tetelo is a giant fucking problem that reveals that maybe the white lady who'd never been to New Orleans was not the person to tell a story about voodoo, ancestry and the legacy of slavery. There was a lot of this kind of thing in the 90s.

Phantasmagoria isn't something I'm personally attached to from the past, but it has the whole s-word disability slur issue that's causing me trouble. It's probably going in all the same, with about a million content warnings. I mentioned to someone else that the rape, misogyny and fatphobia were at least expected.

I Have No Mouth... covers a lot of difficult territory, especially regarding Nimdok, and I think we can thank Ellison's very direct personal involvement in the game's writing for the good handling of that one.
I lowkey suspect that Ellen and Benny's character alterations were made to make them more palatable to family audiences - EVEN THOUGH the game was very much for adults. While Ellen's changes could be arguably meshed into the original story, Benny's been more extensively reworked in a very 90s "we don't talk about the gays even if they're terrible people" kind of way.

@HauntedOwlbear Weird to hear 'Ellison was the voice of reason', considering he wrote, well... a lot of erotica, etc (and I think it may have been some of the nastier stuff from the 70s/80s) and was considered a giant walking asshole by his contemporaries.

@DarkestKale Honestly, considering some of the shit that emerged about his peers, I kind of appreciate Ellison's wearing his assholery on his sleeve.

(I am forced to stan, in a significantly caveated way.)
