Movie from MySQL to MariaDB - easy!
Movie from MariaDB back to MySQL 3+ years later - not so easy! 🥴

@bazkie 3 years of development work using MariaDB
It's honestly a better database system, and offers some things far superior to MySQL
..that were baked into hundreds of stored procs and tables.. 😬
So I had to slightly refactor procs/tables that run 24/7 with mission critical data... I ran tests but ya know.. So very much a "measure 27 times, cut once" approach
@multiverseofbadness oh no! what's the difficulty stem from?
@bazkie I'm over managing my own box for a lot of reasons, so I moved to a managed instance at Azure for MariaDB about 3 1/2 years ago
They quit supporting it long term and put it on a retirement path
I coulda moved to Amazon but my whole infrastructure is on Azure and I really like the subscription model there
Also, MariaDB seems to have lost some steam over the last few years and never really took as large a market hold as I thought it might
@multiverseofbadness ah ouch.. I never dabbled with stored procedures.. sounds annoying!
Why do you have to switch back btw?
@bazkie I mean, they are close enough .. MariaDB is a fork or MySql, and is still good at accepting MySql
But going back to MySQL poses challenges in some areas if you leaned into some of the improvements offered by MariaDB
In a perfect world, MariaDB would have taken deep root and Ida stuck with it
@multiverseofbadness I see.. I guess it's good that there's multiple options to choose from, but at the same time, if they're not fully compatible that's pretty annoying!
@bazkie oh yea... Oracle is ass... Pretty sure that's why I convinced myself that MariaDB was the way... 😂
@multiverseofbadness yeah that would have been better.. is MySQL still owned by Oracle? That's not ideal.. I remember hating it for that 😅
