i don't even need an e-paper tablet, i'd be fine with a regular android tablet but it seems like there are literally zero 4:3 android tablets on the market anymore aside from a handful of epaper devices

Kobo tablets would be fully usable in freedom if it wasn't for the realtek wifi card and how postmarketos uses the proprietary version of Linux. -

GNU/Jihad against "open source"!
Waydroid can run android software, but wayland does not support e-ink displays, which are framebuffer based (yet another L for wayland) and really that's too resource intensive and RAM intensive for the SoC that the kobo's use.
If that is a e-ink reader you want to run, there's a native version of koreader for GNU/Linux (it does not work on BusyBox/Linux, but you can install a free debian chroot and run it from there).
You actually have to manually install one of the few X11 wms that is usable on an e-ink touchscreen from a handful of options. -
