@aral@mastodon.ar.al Yeah, watching people jump in to say

      1. It's not actually Red Hat/IBM being ableist because either A, they're not involved or responsible for Fedora or B. haven't prioritized it, OR
      2. How fucking DARE you word things this way, if ONLY you had asked NICELY instead of being CAPTAIN DICKFACE

I dunno random reply guys, maybe fucking consider that being nice hasn't worked and that maybe we SHOULD be angry about it, yeah? Maybe people who don't have the same accessibility needs should stop politely suggesting it and say "fuck you for shipping a broken screen reader for 8 years despite being aware of the issue". Maybe that's how things actually happen and by being Reply Guys who are Critical Of The Way Things Are Being Said you're just making yourself part of the problem, which is that you're wasting Aral's time and the time of people who need screen readers by arguing about the way he said it and that you're more in the way of progress than Aral is? maybe?

It happens every single time something is brought up. Go direct your reply guy energy to Fedora if you must. Don't fucking criticize someone being upset that a basic feature has been ignored and has consequences for people.

@aud Yep. And yep. (And yep.)

Sending you lots of love. And reminding both of us to remember to take deep breaths… because fuck me if this isn’t frustrating as hell :)

@aral@mastodon.ar.al I am not surprised that the screen reader is broken but I honestly didn't know it was until you brought this up. I'm disappointed, and now I'm also annoyed at the people wasting everyone's time and energy to tone police you.

Fuck IBM, IBM sold machines to goddamn Nazis, the least they can do is fork over some fucking cash to sponsor accessibility. I hate this "if we're not nice to corporations they may not give us a tiny drop of care". Fuck them, throw a brick at them, SHAME THEM. I assure you that is the only thing that will ever work. IBM: DO FUCKING BETTER.

@aud (And it’s not just IBM either although they are likely one of the largest benefactors… Canonical and other companies also ship operating systems based on these components. Meanwhile, everyone has been happily ignoring the elephant in the room while cycle after cycle of development focusses on other things. But woe be it if you point out the ableism in that.)

I know you mean well, but... is it really reasonable to shame anyone for not having implemented certain important features in a program, if you haven't implemented those features in that program either? that they're busy with other things as much as you are, and you call them out as ableist, does that make you a virtue-signalling ableist? it sounds like you're trying to impose your standards on others, and that's not how free software dynamics work, as you know. if I were to demand you to implement features that are important or even essential to me, while you're already struggling to get to other features you identify as strategically more urgent, budgeted and planned, would you find that cool? screaming and shaming might compel others to tend to issues you care about, but it's still a form of coercion. IMHO that's not really cool, even if well-meaning and caring.

my response is probably easy to throw rocks at, but really, my point is that, though you're right that they haven't, like, cared enough to implement or fix those features for years, and you label them ableist for that, you haven't cared enough to implement or fix them either, but you don't label yourself ableist. free software doesn't really have owners, and they don't really owe us anything for us to demand them to work on any features we care about. we show our caring by contributing those features, or enticing others to contribute them. I'm not convinced that shaming is a cool way to entice.

@aral it's wild that your *very* reasonable take was considered so controversial that it offended people to the point they feel the need to publicly announce they're unfollowing you. if anything, this only helps show the ableism that's so deeply ingrained in the average fossbro
