Apparently for LTE, IMS doesn't work and only works for GSM and UTMS and what sends them is NAS (SG-SMS) - whatever that is.
Considering that SMS is pretty much an extremely crappy version of HTTP get/post it should just work over whatever IP packets, but of course they added complexity to it. -

Whatever the mutilated SIP+RTP implementation they use over an internet connection that happens to use LTE as the medium.
There is apparently some 3GPP documents detailing a rough overview, but it's really not that interesting unless you're into disaster tourism. -

I know circuit-switching doesn't work for LTE, and IMS (a.k.a. the combination of P-CSCF, I-CSCF and S-CSCF) was a way to get voice working over a packet-switched network...
