@AbandonedAmerica LA still has a number of those great old theatres like the Mayan, the Orpheum, or the Palace - I hate seeing old theatres crumble.

As for modern theatres, while I appreciate some of the seating changes and the like, I haven't felt compelled to watch movies in the theatre like I used to. For me it is a number of issues:

    - Hollywood films trend towards more sequels or remakes, or "the safe" choice where they just cast Chris Pratt for the main character.
    - I got a big TV, I can wait for the film to stream and I can sit on the couch, in my boxers, with a bag of microwave popcorn and not have to deal with people.
    - I hate people
    - I don't like leaving the house
    - I hate parking lots
    - The magic of seeing a film on the big screen is less attractive than dealing with people
    - The people I hate, are also in the parking lots which I hate
    - I'm also cheap and pay for a lot of streaming services

All this being said, I wish I hated those things less to see Dune (a fucking remake), on the IMAX.

@denniskoch @AbandonedAmerica Not to mention major studios buying theater chains again, which more of this will be coming following the end of the Amount Decree... https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/sony-pictures-acquires-alamo-drafthouse-cinemas-1235920928/

Movie palaces had their own day of reckoning in the late 1970s and 1980s - but now, even our contemporary cinema chains are endangered. Find out why so many are being abandoned in my new Decay Theory article for Atlas Obscura!

There may be no encore in store for these abandoned vaudeville halls and movie palaces.
