   @futurebird I thought (and could be wrong) that the distinction was being made between pardoning (which I thought indicated that the crime or conviction was not valid, etc) and commutation, where excessive sentences could be dealt with. But maybe this is my misunderstanding.

     I don't think it was wise of Biden to say he would not pardon Hunter *before* sentencing. Pardons should be broadly granted for excessive sentences. Will it be excessive? Probably not. But it could be.
