Kind of impressed by Apple's commitment to security with their AI nonsense (especially in comparison to Microsoft). That said:
First, I'm not sure I trust anything powered by OpenAI.
Second and perhaps more importantly: I can't see where the profit is in this system; you're talking about an investment in a bunch of specialized, rapidly outdated hardware that is costly to run to add a few bells and whistles to their phone experience.
I expect this to end up a pretty expensive premium service.

I definitely don’t trust anything run by OpenAI, but the one OpenAI part appears to be perfunctory and off to the side. The meat of this is all in-house, and much of it on-device (and increasingly so over time). I’m not quite sure how the profit structure works either, but I assume by default it’s a ploy to sell more of their high-margin hardware.

I don’t think that’s correct. They’re advertising local compute as a headline feature. It’s on-device for many/most tasks on newer devices with fancy chips, on-cloud as a fallback. •If• they maintain that, then the percentage of new-enough devices — and thus the percentage of it happening locally — will increase over time, and cloud demand shrinks. Who knows, future etc etc, but I can imagine how this does make profit sense fo rthem.

@inthehands @tess Yeah, if the models were local then it might help fuel the upgrade circus. But they aren't. It's all just cloud compute.

@inthehands @drgroftehauge this is a good point; of course, we will need to see how well is scales and how much battery life the new hardware ends up costing. At the end of the day, users will not trade custom emojis and slightly better predictive typing for halving their phones' battery life.

Yup, all that. And in addition to battery life, energy use is always an environmental concern no matter whether it happens in a data center or a user’s hands.
