I HAVE RENTED A CAR THROUGH "EXPEDIA"
What I expected:
- At my destination I walk up to a counter and wait for half an hour increasingly bored for them to give me keys.
What I got:
- After paying, I find out I have to download an "app"
- The "app" will take in scans of my drivers license, and it's too late to object to this except by cancelling the car reservation
- The "app" utilizes a previously unknown-to-me Android feature to sniff one-time codes from my SMSes and authenticate me (1/2)

- I immediately forget completely about renting the car as I drop everything to try to figure out why Android is doing this and how I turn it off
- I find Google instructions for turning it off https://developer.android.com/identity/autofill/autofill-optimize#enabled which refer to a box that my phone does not have. Further research leads nowhere
- I have now spent more than half an hour on this and have made no progress toward setting up the "app" or the actual car rental (2/2)

Someday this kind of thing is going to happen enough times I'm going to stop using Android and switch to LineageOS or some kind of open source thing that allows me to *actually* disable all of Google's privacy violations. And then one day after that I'll rent a car. And after I've paid the car service will tell me I have to download an app. And the app won't work because DRM will detect I'm running an open source fork and not "real" Android & therefore the app will declare the context "insecure"
