What happens after the European elections?
How will the President of the European Commission and the college of Commissioners be elected?
We explain it all to you in 7 steps ⬇️
1️⃣ Taking into account the results of the elections, the European Council will propose a candidate to the European Parliament.
2️⃣ The new Parliament will have to elect the President of the European Commission by an absolute majority.
5️⃣Each Commissioners-designate will then appear before the European Parliament. That’s when they are evaluated by parliamentary committees. The whole team is then approved in a single vote.
6️⃣The new Commission is then formally appointed by the European Council, by a qualified majority.
3️⃣The President-elect will then receive proposals of candidates for Commissioners. She or he will select them and allocate policy portfolios.
4️⃣Together with the Council, the President-elect will adopt the list of proposed Members of the Commission, one from each EU country, including the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, who will also become a Vice-President of the Commission.
7️⃣After that, all will be set for the new European Commission to take office.
