GNU experimented with +flags before standardizing on --long-options. early MCC Interim [GNU/]Linux releases had them, in case you wish to see them in action. there are downloadable images that run on qemu. there was no Linux-libre back then, but the kernel Linux was still free software at that time.-

Bartosz Taudul (wolfpld@mastodon.gamedev.place)'s status on Wednesday, 05-Jun-2024 08:19:17 JST Bartosz Taudul There was a library called libiberty, which is mostly forgotten now, but it was linked into every program compiled with DJGPP, and that's how I remember it.
It was notable for the pun when you wanted to link it. You had to type "-liberty".
There was so much potential for trolling. All you had to do was tell RMS that "minus liberty" sounded bad. An alternative way of passing parameters would be added to gcc and linker, and Stallman would evangelize that you should write "+liberty" from now on.
