One of the most requested features on Mastodon's github is for backfilling old posts on remote profiles when they are followed, so that followed profiles are never empty.

This would make federation much much more intuitive.

If you're comfortable using Github, and if you agree this feature would be a good idea, could you give it a thumbs up so they know there is demand for it?

    Thank you!

@feditips@mstdn.social fun fact: backfilling is WIP (~30%) done in Calckey!

I don't think you can on the official app? Try using a third party app and the "unlisted" visibility for replies.

      Sounds fantastic! ?

Just to pass on what smaller server admins had said, they would want some kind of adjustable limit on how many posts are backfilled, as their servers may not be able to cope with massive amounts of backfilling.

@feditips interesting. I don't think it would be too difficult to get this result developed. If I have time in the next weeks I'll take a look into it in the next weeks and make a pull request. Shouldn't be that complicated.

Even just fetching 10 posts would be an improvement over no fetching at all. IMHO main thing is to avoid ever seeing a blank profile (which is possible if someone is the first to have any interaction with an account from that server).

@feditips yeah just looked a second into it and AFAIK there is no API method for this yet. (Or I haven't seen it). So I guess creating an API method that fetches the last 1000 posts or so would make sense. Rate limiting on this would also make sense, otherwise it could be used as an attack. Have to tinker around a bit.

Anyways fetching ALL 100k posts (if someone posted that much) wouldn't make sense. Should still be limited to some kind

@feditips@mstdn.social @potd@mstdn.social on iOS, the one client I can recommend is SocialHub: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/id1474451582

It's open source but costs $4.99 for the App Store version, supports Mastodon, Pleroma, Misskey, Pixelfed, Twitter and even Tumblr and Slack!

      @Mirteaaa

If there's an account on another server that no one on your server has ever interacted with, and no one they follow has ever interacted with the account either, then the account may appear blank, even if it has posts.

With backfilling, as soon as you follow an account your server would automatically fetch the most recent posts from that "blank" account and stop it appearing blank on your server. At the moment, Mastodon doesn't do this.

@feditips But instance admins would definately need control over how many posts would be backfilled, cause this might result in huge resource jumps in no time.

      Yes!

      Couple of things:

If you just want to reveal all the messages in a thread click on the eye icon ?️ in the top right corner, it toggles them open and closed.

If you want to just disable it completely and reveal all messages in all threads, log in through the website and go to Preferences > Always Expand Posts Marked With Content Warnings, tick the box and click "Save changes".

@feditips unrelated to your post but yours is the first I've seen to do this: Do you know how to disable the "tap anywhere to reveal" overlay that appears on your post and on its replies? It makes Mastodon really awkward to use.
