    I am far more terrified about the pending #H5N1 virus that is spreading than #COVID at the latter’s worst.

    👉🏾 U.S. to make millions of bird flu vaccine doses this summer, as cases grow https://www.cbsnews.com/news/bird-flu-vaccine-doses-this-summer-cases/

    COVID’s fatality rate was between 1%-3% (which is usually high for a virus).

    I have read reports about H5N1 having close to 60% fatality rate. I need to stock up on #N95 masks again.

      @darnell yeah. Folks shouldn't have let their guard down with COVID either; the long term damage of repeat infections of that on your body, and long COVID, is no joke.

      @dave @darnell I just saw this: the virus has mutated. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/science-and-disease/h5n1-virus-in-latest-human-case-has-mutated-officials-say/

        H5N1 virus in latest human case has mutated, officials say
        The slight evolution in the virus is associated with ‘adaptation to mammalian hosts’, according to the Centre for Disease Control

      @DrPen @darnell yup. It's predictable though.

      * Farms have no financial incentive to avoid the spread, or disclose issues.
      * Public health as a whole has been abandoned due to COVID.
      * People are actively ignoring mitigation for COVID

      Combine all of these things together, and we've a scenario where any human spread of a mutated flu is likely to get quite far before appropriate action is taken

      @darnell I wonder if US public health will even bother mentioning masks this time or just go directly to a vaccine only approach. 4.8M doses (assuming 1 dose confers immunity) is about 1.5% of the US population. On an optimistic note, if the worst does come to pass, there will be plenty of doses freed up by the "I will not comply" thanks to the politicization of preventive medicine. N95's should be a staple PPE available in every pharmacy, but good idea to stock up before there are shortages.

      @RebelGeek99 Yeah, I am going to start wearing them at the airport again. I know security will flag me down as they get upset when they can not see my face, but I will have to be super early at the airport. 😕

      @RebelGeek99 Last time I was at the airport at flag by security. It was OK and the screening process was quick, but it was really annoying.

      @darnell not a bad idea. Fwiw, Asian and black people were the only other masked folks I saw during recent air travel between the US, Korea, Thailand, and Japan. Depends on where you're traveling to how much hassle they'll give you, I'd expect. Those airplanes and airport lines are like petri dishes tho 🦠

      The USA is feeding cows on chicken shit, on an industrial scale. What could possibly go wrong?
