    I know this won't change your overall position on Nostr @dave and @adam

    https://stacker.news/items/558629

    However, this post demonstrates how developers and maybe the P2.0 community should think about Nostr. Not as a Twitter clone, but more like a decentralized backend that gives apps "cloud" features without being tied to a big cloud provider. Decentralized Identity is just one of those features.

      @adam @ChrisLAS Unfortunately, I just can’t see any other use case for it that is compelling. IMO it has no real world advantages over ActivityPub, and is in fact more centralized based on the few relays that carry all messages vs the hundreds of AP servers.

      Most of the major Nostr devs are working on it because of Jack grants or VC money. When the VC/Jack money dries up, the party will be over. That’s why I call it a huge “distraction”. It’s pulling devs away from solving real problems.

      @adam @ChrisLAS Nostr works really well as an IRC replacement (ease of websocket, no nickserv cruft), which was what I built with Mkultra, until I ran into the wall of relays not supporting the NIPs I needed to bring other messages from relays back into the chat room. Then it kind of died.

      Oscar built a similar (better) system, which I fully support and intend to bridge to AP.

      @ChrisLAS @dave

      These are not innovations.
      These are solutions looking for a problem that doesn't exist.

      But, like you guys, the social media aspect doesn't really appeal to me.

      The range of uses is more like a possible Podping replacement (should it ever be needed). Or a login ID I can use in Fountain, Podverse, etc., Or the ability to @mention people in a Boost, perhaps, and have it ping them on Nostr, etc.

      1/2 @adam @dave Yeah, I think those criticisms are fair. But much of that could have been said about early Bitcoin, too. A range of solutions get developed at the software layer (like we are seeing the Primal app and Fountain guys building out right now) to smooth that stuff over.

      My overall takeaway from that chat was that it felt like the current path is a tough swim upstream when perhaps there is a path where we can leverage those solutions being built ATM.

      @ChrisLAS @dave
      We have in fact already implemented it into the 2.0 chat feature, but of course nobody uses it.

      @ChrisLAS @dave Please look into how relays work. They are the weakest link in this claim and by no means censorship resistant. It is also reinventing a wheel that exists and has been rolling for a very long time. Yes, a cryptographic identify is great, until you lose your keys. Then you no longer exist. While I like that feature for my bitcoin (money) that is a recipe for disaster for online apps like the 'social media' this article discusses.
