     I have now learned that many people like to run 12 speeds in the rear and no derailleur in the front, which is more reasonable, but I still think that's an unnecessary number of speeds

     Who really needs a bike with this many speeds? By the time you add a front derailleur, that's 24 or 36 speeds! Dumb!
