I mean a lot of open source software just has practical benefits. E.g Linux and the BSDs are much lighter than Windows and run great on old hardware.

@dushman @twinspin6 it's kind of oversold these days, Linux is now majorly bloated over Windows XP. The world has gone insane :insane_eagle: even mainstream Linux distros want 1-2GB of RAM and 8GB of disk space. Alpine or Puppy get you a little closer to that but still not comparable. -

@sun@shitposter.world @twinspin6@outerheaven.club Linux is now majorly bloatedI mean you can easily do a setup that uses less than 100mb of RAM with a GUI on a distro like Alpine

Also BSDs are lighter than Linux, you can use those. OpenBSD runs super fast on my thinkpad. -

@dushman @twinspin6 I've done it with Puppy Linux, ran comfortably on a mini Thinkpad with 512MB of RAM -

@cohle @dushman @twinspin6 OpenBSD isn't as good at SMP as Linux and it has a fork of X11 that doesn't support as much hardware so it might be running in VESA mode which is noticeably slower. -

What kind of thinkpad? I've tried it on an x230 and it ran significantly slower than linux which I assumed was due to the security features. -

@dushman @twinspin6 I'd totally do it if I still had a netbook. I use Alpine in a few of my containers, like for my email server and for my gitea server -

You could get Alpine with Openbox to use even less RAM if you run your own kernel with only the things you needInsane Eagle Sun likes this. -

@dushman @sun @twinspin6 Did you tweak it for performance options? Normally it's slower than on Linux by a bit of a noticeable margin. Albeit mostly minor -

@dushman @twinspin6 @cohle openbsd also forked it to make it privilege-separated which has an impact on performance although I couldn't tell you to what extent. when I run OpenBSD I don't have a GUI
