      They actually don't have to stop questioning you. Instead, anything they learn is excluded from evidence, and may result in a "fruit of the poisonous tree" problem, i.e. if they learn where you put the gun, they can't rely on ballistics if they acquire and test it. This is a simplistic example though. Fruit of he poisonous tree is a complicated doctrine, and there are exceptions like inevitable discovery. Nonetheless, it's usually a good idea to stop the interrogation.

      Nonetheless, what the cops did in this case was fucked. I"m surprised that plaintiff settled out of concern re qualified immunity. If the cops can interrogate a person for that amount of time on unsupported / univestigated assumptions, and tell people that their parent is dead and that they'll kill their dog if they don't confess, what can't they do to any of us? That the blood was from stick tests could have been discovered by simply looking around dad's bedroom, and the "cadaver dog" story sounds like post factual police bullshit.

      I had a case like this once. Corporation enters into contract with my client. Contract is signed by corporate insiders and has a warranty of agency clause. Client provides services. Corporation stiffs him. I write... hey you owe my client money. Corporation, thinking they're being smart, responds X and Y didn't have authority to enter into the contract, so it's void. Me... fine, instead of just suing you, I'll sue you and your officers and let the court figure out who's liable.
