Deciding not to vote in the US as a protest against the system is like dropping out of school to show how smart you are.

Like "The consequences won't affect me personally so I don't have to compromise my ideals."

mark (atleagle@mastodon.online)'s status on Monday, 27-May-2024 23:17:09 JST mark @1dalm @brianvastag I also wish everyone would vote, but not all of the abstainers are doing it from privilege or misguided protest.
When someone tells me that they are already in the hell that many people are afraid of getting caught up in, I understand

mark (atleagle@mastodon.online)'s status on Tuesday, 28-May-2024 00:14:41 JST mark @1dalm @brianvastag I'm thinking of people who are already very oppressed. People who are in fear of this iteration of govt that goes out of it's way to keep certain rich elite white men in power. The lack of rights on the upcoming shit show is only going to apply to a few people who were close to that class. Saving suffering for the not-quite-elite-enough isn't really a driving factor for anyone who has not been protected by those who have been close to privilege

Dallas (Join Something IRL) (1dalm@deacon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 28-May-2024 00:14:42 JST Dallas (Join Something IRL) The only abstainers I can respect are those that do so for religious reasons. I may not agree with the theology, but I can respect it.
Besides that, anyone who doesn't vote doesn't get a minute of my attention for their complaints
(Of course the is assuming they are physically and legally capable of voting, but if not then I don't really consider those people abstainers anyway.)
