Mastodon has no plans on expand the content cache to feature retaining “favorited” posts. In short, when the cache wipes history, your and users’ favorites will go too; like dust in the wind, and that’s now considered “by design”.
What an awful design.

@shanie there is a command admins can run that clears out posts that you or your users HAVEN'T interacted with in any way, but it's not well documented as a solution to the Content Retention problem.
