@brennen @robey my favorite is "not only are we not google, our whole company basically just exists in order to plant trees!"

      https://www.ecosia.org/

      which, like

ok, sure; even if it's a scam at least it's charmingly naive

@technomancy @robey "look, we're not google! (plz ignore megacorporation behind the curtain)" has had more legs as a business plan than i would really have expected.

@robey @brennen are you saying like ... it's misleading from a privacy perspective? or that it's laundering the service in order to improve the privacy?

to me it feels analogous to invidious or nitter; no amount of changing the frontend is going to make twitter not be shit, but at least you're putting gloves on before you pick it up

(but admittedly they are not super up-front about being an alternate frontend like invidious is)

@brennen @technomancy also we should have a pithy name for this, like "privacy laundering"

@robey @brennen I'm assuming they are not passing your cookie directly on thru and have some degree of anonymization, but yeah it's not a great look

@technomancy @brennen yeah i'm just thinking that if you used DDG because they advertised better privacy... but then they're just a gateway forwarding your data to a big tech company... you might perceive a little deception
