every #linux post that actually lands on my timeline: hey folks let's be gracious and understanding; now is not the time to rub peoples noses in what's happened

the replies when I click thru: *the most rancid snobbery imaginable from @firstnameLastname@betterthanyou.fossbro*

@Alexjgriffith you'll notice my latest game uses tic80 which doesn't have that problem =)

but yeah; to me it feels less that "userspace" is a mess and more "libc is trash" but the end result is roughly the same because everyone uses libc no matter what

my solution so far has been "keep a thinkpad in the house that's two debian versions behind so I can build with a libc that's old enough for everyone" but I'm not saying that's a good solution

@technomancy Userspace on Linux is an absolute mess. Without AppImages supporting more than a single distro becomes a game of which version of libc do you have on your system, bro?

With windows I can boot up an executable compiled in the 90s without a thought.

@Alexjgriffith (but also, it wasn't until I started doing game jams that I ever had the desire to run a binary I downloaded from a web site instead of apt, and even now it only happens twice a year so I can deal with it)

@cian imagine the most rancid spyware you can, and then crank it up a couple notches in awfulness

@Alexjgriffith appimages are great if you have a program that is never connected to the network or any source of potentially untrusted data

which means ... games, basically; not sure I'd ever trust them for anything else

@technomancy 100%, almost all of my applications are installed through a package manager or a deb provided by the company.

AppImages are great if you want to run a snapshot of a program (more than a couple years old or bleading edge) and you don't want to go through the process of configuration and compilation.
