     @pernia @Owl i just rebooted and everything still works... i reemerged before rebooting lol. it did not in fact remove the binaries

     There is usually a separate kernel headers package, which is used to build third-party modules for use with dkms. If you don't use any, you don't need even that. But I don't see why one might want to have complete kernel sources on their system, unless you're intending to build kernel with a different configuration 🤷
