@j @DutchBoomerMan I don't believe America is capable of that anymore.

@sun @DutchBoomerMan then why do they estimate it'll take 10 years to rebuild? If it was actually that important and they cared about getting it up quickly they'd have it back up by the end of the year. It could also be used to stimulate the economy but no they aren't doing that because it isn't about that.

In a year?! The original bridge took 5 years to build, and that was after multiple years of planning. It's the third longest land bridge in the world. If it's rebuilt, they'll probably need additional planning to add in fenders (like the Golden Gate has) to prevent this from happening again), plus all the newer building material standards.
America is still capable of this type of engineering. Seattle (a fucked up left-hole city) is still on schedule for the first railroad track on a floating bridge ever.
When this happened, I really did feel like this was a total accident. These ships are run into the group by international companies, and are known to have tons of issues. If a ship breaks down at sea .. it's not a huge deal. They can turn on batteries, warn other ships, etc. Other bridges are protected by fenders, a big oversight here, but one that didn't matter for half a century. The harbor master got out a mayday, emergency dropped anchor, and got the police to close the bridge (too bad they didn't get a warning to construction workers). Every safety procedure was followed to the letter. There are major shipping collisions every year that don't make the news because they don't take out major bridges.
This guy makes some good points and does make me rethink my stance. When I first saw that headline, I thought the crew were being returned to the ship .. but they weren't allowed to leave?! WTF? Yea .. it's a little more sus. But a "cyberattack" is stupid ... there's nothing cyber about it. You could weld one of the grounding lines to a capacitor and a fuse and have it fail the same way. You'd probably have to as I doubt these ships have an Internet-of-Trash infrastructure. People who claimed there was a rogue GPS: I doubt the harbor master would use a GPS in port. Even at night he can see the bridge, and they know the port lanes inside and out.
As far as Hawaii, I still think that was a controlled fire meant to clear real estate and kill people.
