Sick Sun (sun@shitposter.world)'s status on Friday, 17-May-2024 00:36:13 JST Sick Sun "evs aren't here to save the planet they are here to save the car industry" look I actually want a car they are super convenient. I exist as a corporeal entity that can experience pleasure or pain and I don't have to justify my existence to anyone so I am entitled to "wasteful" things -

Sick Sun (sun@shitposter.world)'s status on Friday, 17-May-2024 00:40:53 JST Sick Sun @istvan from power usage they are better but maybe not better for the environment when you factor in mining for rare earth metals etc. -

They let you feel virtuous about your low water bill because you secretly sneak out each night to take a massive shit in your neighbor’s yard.

And why planned obsolescence is so bad for electronics.

I'm calling it in 20 years max, people will finally admit that maybe filling cars with a million Chinese batteries that will lose charge over time is not a real solution. Also it does promote even more exploitation of the Congo. Which has been the target of resource gathering for advanced countries for centuries now. Not like we weren't already doing this, the demand for even more rare earth minerals is def going to cause more of this.

I mean the real solution is building good public transport. Car centric infrastructure fucking sucks, thank god I don't live in America. In conversation permalink -

Most traffic is in cities though so it would largely solve that problem anyway.

dobó istván (istvan@noauthority.social)'s status on Friday, 17-May-2024 02:56:02 JST dobó istván @sun Yeah. That’s what I mean.
In China there were many stories of children dying of heavy metal poisoning because the rice field was downriver from a battery factory.
The cost to extract rare earths and build batteries and solar panels etc is incredibly heavy on the environment, and it’s not being factored in when people think about the impact of new energy because it’s someone else’s child paying for it.
