@puniko @RyunoKi@layer8.space @pepperwool@layer8.space The Chinese part already has a well-established presence on Fedi for years, total number of users is around 100 K (?). But there are only few interactions with English instances. And due to Fedi's architecture, it means they're completely outside English Fedi's event horizon and practically undetectable, most people won't even know they exist. And due to fears of authority suppression, many can only reached via the protocol, the web page returns 404, this certainly does not help.

* mao.mastodonhub.com: "the cat site", 14.5K users, 383 active. Founded by a social media personality on Chinese history and classical studies with many followers. However, the admin's ignorance on web hosting combined with stubbornness made it the ONLY Fedi server hosted inside Mainland China, and caused a huge controversy, including many blocks as the server could be seized by the authorities at any moment.
* donotban.com: "the Douban underground", a spin-off community by douban.com users, a social site (think Tumblr + IMDB + GoodReads) with a young liberal userbase highly critical of the government, and is subjected to frequently censorship, thus the pun "douBAN". User count hidden for safety. Likely huge.

And it's not Fedi without LGBTQ+ sites. Here are just what I can remember for now, there are at least 5+ sites:
* m.hitorino.moe: Honorable mention, now closed due to an unfortunate series of events, 1K (?) users. One of the earliest instance. Had some of the most creative people I've seen, much like the English "anarchist programmer catgirl" Fedi.
* biplus.date: Everyone says Fedi is a dating site, we now have our proof right there. 544 users, 236 active.
* hub.mtf.party: 391 users, 40 active.
* kazv.moe: admin was once a Pleroma dev, the site now runs on its own Pleroma fork.

I'm not familiar with the Taiwanese Fedi, but there is one for sure...
* g0v.social: Taiwanese civil liberty & free software group, highly influential. Cofounder Audrey Tang is the world's top Perl hacker and currently the Minister of Digital Affairs in the government. 5.11K users, 927 active.
