honestly, I'd say "long block" because pulling a head is experienced mechanic stuff in 2024. Back in the 70s, not as much .. but you also had a lot more room to work in.

@sickburnbro I'm torn on question 1, because I'm also in the long block camp, but I've done enough DIY stuff that people claim "you can't do that at home!" successfully to where I think I could do a full engine or tranny teardown and rebuild.

@TrevorGoodchild there is no progress without pain. You will shear bolts, you will destroy parts, but as long as you don't make the same mistake twice, the price is ususally worth the education.
Same with exercise, as long as you do no permanent damage, it is worth it.

@sickburnbro I did a similar one on goob regarding fitness. I believe the question I asked was "can you run 5k without stopping for rest". No mention on time required.
Results were not promising, excuses were abundant

@BowsacNoodle I could certainly do a full rebuild at home, it's just about time and tools. Most people don't have the tools to correctly re-seat the head on a modern vehicle with an overhead cam ( extra weight )

@sickburnbro The famous quote regarding either suffering the pain of discipline or suffering the pain of regret comes to mind.
-

@TrevorGoodchild the culture used to make sure people knew the pain of regret

@sickburnbro I've replaced the starter before and I had no idea what I was doing. I have the sense that car manufacturers like to gatekeep knowledge about how their vehicles work so that as few people can work on them as possible

@monsterislandcolonizer well, I can understand both sides. The government makes rules forcing car manufacturers to do things, and the result is more complicated cars.

@demonofustio @monsterislandcolonizer well, a lot of that is due to complexity of meeting dumb epa numbers on new cars. Fouling on direct injection is an example of this. Car manufactures figured it out and made updates so it would do a little upper manifold injection to help.

@sickburnbro @monsterislandcolonizer And terrible fuel quality where engines go bad over time.

@sickburnbro @TrevorGoodchild Today they make sure people take the path that leads to regret and line it with pharmaceuticals, gradually increasing the cost of being alive.

@sickburnbro That 27/73 breakdown suggests the majority of respondents were wammen.

@ACL9000 @TrevorGoodchild and a 5k is easy. go up to half marathon without stopping and I bet general populace is like 1% if not less.

@TrevorGoodchild @sickburnbro That 5k poll stuck with me. Answering yes put you in the top 45%.

@TrevorGoodchild @sickburnbro 3.1 miles is not a thing. Hopefully this was eye opening to people. They can leave the car and walk to the market.

You don’t sheer bolts if you use a damn torque wrench, kids these days dont want to do shit correctly.
-

@NorseRealist @Dudebro @TrevorGoodchild I've made the mistake of using a big torque wrench on a small bolt and it didn't click because it was at the absolute low end of the range

@Dudebro @TrevorGoodchild @sickburnbro half the people how actually know what a torque wrench is still use it wrong from my experience

@WilhelmIII @ACL9000 @demonofustio @monsterislandcolonizer I do sta-bil on anything that will sit more than a month.

The alcohol is hygroscopic, so the moisture in the air eventually turns to varnish in the tank.
If you live in a low-humidity area you have less to worry about.
Where I live every gas can gets Sta-Bil when I fill it.

@sickburnbro @monsterislandcolonizer I mean i guess but all i have to do is talk to my boomer landlord and he explains how the new fuel kills everything.

@demonofustio @sickburnbro @monsterislandcolonizer I run pump ethanol-contaminated gas in everything, and I let it sit over winter. Works fine. I have never found damage to any aluminum or rubber, and I haven't found varnish in any float bowls. I have next to no idea why today's gas has such a reputation.

@demonofustio @WilhelmIII @ACL9000 @monsterislandcolonizer if you have a problem with a mower, it's probably the carb. if you take it off and blow carb cleaner through all the ports you can probably find what isn't working.

@sickburnbro @WilhelmIII @ACL9000 @monsterislandcolonizer I use the stabilizer too. It works thank goodness. I learned my lesson 2 years ago when running a mower. Lost that one couldnt g3t it to run and wasted like300$ off the first one. So ive been more care tended to make sure doesnt break.

@sickburnbro @WilhelmIII @ACL9000 @monsterislandcolonizer Oh we did with the 2nd one i bought whih i dissabled. The 1st one belonged to my landlord but he disnt want to put money down for lawn moorer cause of how fustrating it was to take care of them.
We found out this new honda Bridgeport lawn moore that have no primer or choke function, has a <plastic carbortor> most pieces are made of plastic. Further more the air intake valve for the carborator. Is a very tiny hole. And its just too tiny in general.
Like maybe 5mm? So we had to make it a tad bigger so it doesnt get clogged when we deal with the varnish.

I've had bad gas in my genset and that is very bad juju.
Since then I Sta-Bil all my gas and have had zero problems.
YMMV.

@WilhelmIII @ACL9000 @demonofustio @monsterislandcolonizer gensets in particular you want to be careful with because they do a lot of sitting unless you're on a construction site and you can never 100% empty a carb.
