@map One of the talks I did about a decade ago was titled “Easy Beats Open.” I was speaking at a FLOSS event so it was a little more incendiary than it needed to be, but I think the core premise has borne out: “easy” isn’t just about aesthetics or fewer options, it’s about the cumulative barriers between a user and the stuff they want/need to do. Although it’s not in everyone’s way, non-oss licenses can be one of those barriers.

“Easy” is a kind of open-ness, and “open” is one kind of easy.

The prevailing narrative about open source and distributed social media not "taking off" is at least partly because they are hard to understand and lack UX. Meanwhile we lament the loss of "the old web" (geocitites, blogs etc). Was the old web easy to understand? Is it still there, overshadowed by more approachable and approached corporate social media? Would it even be possible to have an approachable web by the people for the people? Is that mainly a people problem or a technology problem?
