Once again, I ask and beg of you to buy a 2012 or older car since these automakers don't give a shit about your privacy and peace of mind. You can thank me later. https://sherwood.news/tech/how-to-opt-out-of-the-privacy-nightmare-that-comes-factory-installed-in-new/

How to opt out of the privacy nightmare that comes with new Hondas
I was the first person to ask my Honda dealer how to turn off data sharing. It didn't go well....

@koteisaev @lowtechmagazine Try living in a area where cars are still needed to get to where you want to go. There's a lot of them, especially in rural and some urban areas.

@moelassus Surprised that still nobody yet not tried to bootstrap project of some "opensource" car, like Framework Laptop, with 3d-printed frame and audited privacy-friendliness.

@koteisaev @moelassus In the US at least, if you do that, prison time is a certainty per the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) so there's a reason why we don't see that.

@joeo10 That is why I told _may be_ instead of _you should_. Still, hope, you would not object to rest of my comment.
I bet people will start to make some "viruses" for these "too smart" cars to prevent data sent outside car by spoofing server replies. But these cars likely will not be accepted at service centers, I guess.

@koteisaev @joeo10 many, if not all, manufacturers will void your warranty if the telemetry system is interfered with.

@joeo10 @koteisaev @moelassus Computer Fraud and Abuse Act shouldn't come into play if you own the car, no?

That would be like jailbreaking a phone you own being illegal.

@grantlemons @koteisaev @moelassus All modern cars have smart capabilities and increasingly you don't actually "own" your car so the CFAA absolutely comes into play.
