I am starting to resent the devs in this space who are obviously misrepresenting the tool and making everyone hate it.

To add on, if you are a dev working on an AI implementation that assumes the AI will do everything itself, this is for you. I'm calling you out. AI is a TOOL for humans to use. It obviously cannot think for itself so stop making people think it does!

@BeAware I get it. I took yesterday and today off from writing about AI because there's more marketing than actual technology right now.
There's some good stuff on AI out there. The trick is finding it, thinking about it, and generally explaining why it's bs or explaining why present use of it is not sustainable.

As always as it is with tools, these computer systems are only as good or evil as the ones who wield them.
And the ones who wield them instead are controlled by the incentives that make them successfull.
We have quite fucked up incentives for the AI companies. I think it’s that the US government so afraid of not ”winning the race with China”, anything goes right now.
Cold wars aren’t good for truth nor morality. Lots of fucked up shit happens in wars.

@BeAware @knowprose People operate on feelings. The unfortunate thing is, our feelings emulate a lot of sensemaking. Hence we think we are making sense, but it’s actually that we just remember past occasions of reasoning linked to that particular bad feeling related to an event or symbol.
So it probably would be near damn impossible for people who haven’t a real understanding of how LLM’s work to be able to be of two minds of it. They are simply feeling it.

Xenophobia is not dissimilar in that regard.
More than likely the people developing the stuff know, and the people marketing the stuff don't care to know or don't care to show they know.

But also, I feel like this happens to every hype cycle. There have been grifters and shysters since the dawn of time.
There are also the good-natured ignorant folk just trying to get by and not understanding they are adding to the mess.

@BeAware @gimulnautti I'd have to look at the code to be able to say. 'Well funded code' does not mean 'good code', just like saying the government is spending $X doesn't mean one sees commensurate improvement.
What I can say is that startup code I have dealt with made me adopt the title of software archaeologist. .
