Giving #LineageOS a shot on my old Pixel 4. Hoping to see how much of my life I can replicate on FOSS software. There will be work-related stuff that won't move over, but so far, I've got the basics covered.

@gabek I've got my password manager, I've got my 2FA passwords, I've got the Fennec browser, I've got Fedi, I've got Fetlife, I've got email, I've got filtering of spam calls, I've got my podcasts. Not too shabby for a first night. It's a little annoying to know that phone will not be able to access my Discord communities. I'd rather keep it clean of telemetry and personal data tracking, so that'll be a tough call to make.

@gabek Yeah, ultimately, I'll likely butt up against, say, wanting to watch Youtube on it. There might be some app that gets around some of the more irritating parts of that. And my roller derby league uses Slack, so that'll also be a sticking point. But those are problems for future me.

@roadriverrail Not to give you more homework, but /e/OS by Murena is a fork of LineageOS that integrates microG at the system level so that you can run pretty much any proprietary app from the Play Store alongside FOSS ones, while still trying to obfuscate data and respect your privacy.

This does not go nearly as far as other projects' privacy work, like Graphene, but the UX and how it works will be transparent to what you are used to.

@Brett_E_Carlock That's an interesting concept, and I appreciate knowing this exists. Really, this is kinda a 3 month study in what I can to do have improved privacy on my phone, coupled with seeing what I can do to have a happy digital life off the big platforms. Getting it to a minimum such that it could be the daily driver phone would be a win; I can tell the matter of Slack would be a bit of an irritation because I'm an officer of my derby league and need very regular Slack access.

@gabek It looks like ones I looked at would be a bit limited and annoying for supporting my personal choice to be a contrarian. 😆

@roadriverrail It seems like many people like the Matrix bridge workflow for Discord, Slack, etc. I briefly tried to get it to work, but didn't get very far.

@roadriverrail Ooh, interesting! My Pixel 4a has an increasingly broken charging port, and I'm contemplating replacing it with another 4a and maybe de-googling. I'd be particularly interested in hearing your thoughts on the camera in FOSS-land if you have time. I think the 4's camera is pretty great but I don't know how much of that is hardware and how much is Google's own software.

@OpinionatedGeek Is there something in particular I could demonstrate for you? I'm not super big on phone cameras. If I get cute selfie or a picture of one of my cats, then I'm satisfied.

This can be a bit fiddly, but it might be worth it if Slack access is a need for you.

@Brett_E_Carlock Yeah, I did look at that last night, and I think that might be a bit too fiddly, and at least some amount of annoyance wouldbe borne by other people, so that's in the "eh, we'll see" file.

      More homework, if you like:
I used the Slack bot by t2bot.io to mirror my work slacks to my Matrix account and FOSS Matrix apps.
