I feel like the value proposition for my Roku TV is shifting in the direction of my getting a different TV. Is there any viable and reasonably accessible way to jailbreak the thing?

@AnnemarieBridy It's best to get a TV with a Google TV or Android TV interface as it has a basic mode where the internet features can be turned off on setup. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/02/the-best-feature-of-google-tv-you-can-turn-it-off-for-a-dumb-tv-mode/

Sony and some Hisense and TCL TVs have it.

@AnnemarieBridy These companies (I can use Vizio as a prime example), know that they make more money spying on people than TVs sold. I feel Sony, Hisense, and TCL (Google/Android TV) are for now the least evil out of all of the TV manufacturers out there.

Sadly, all TV operating systems, even separate sticks are riddled with ads and unless you tinker with a Raspberry Pi (with PiHole), it's only going to get worse. It's why I never let go of my physical media.

@joeo10 Our Roku TV is a TCL, but my understanding is that it can’t be OS-agnostic. Is that wrong? Clearly, I need to do some homework. I don’t have an issue with having Internet connectivity. I actually need it. I just don’t want Roku’s home screen and interface with the promise of more intrusive ads.
