   On yesterday's commute between the office and Japanese evening class, my shifter cable for the rear derailleur snapped (so I rode back home single-speed style 😅).

   Today I took it to a bike shop, and of course, the chain, the cassette and the derailleur itself were completely knackered (I actually trust this great Chinese guy at the shop, he never tried to sell me stuff if it's not needed, and always finds cheaper options, so I'm pretty sure he's not ripping me off).

   But given the cost of the tube in London, even this slightly unplanned expense will easily pay for itself. The bike itself is 12 years old and has done about 25,000 km so far. 🚲

     @jasonmolenda this wasn't the original chain or cassette though, but yeah the derailleur was the original one. I'm probably partly to blame as I don't take very good care of the bike, especially in winter when it's cold and wet, and cleaning the bike out in the cold is not an attractive proposition 😁

     @mario a little surprised the derailleur needed replacing but not surprised by the rest, riding in UK weather is rough on the drivetrain. I usually only get max 10000km on my 11 speed chains and if you keep riding on a chain as it elongates/stretches, it wears down all the cogs on the cassette and the chainrings on the front. And that’s not taking exposure to water into account.
