@acdha I think that “actually, everything you think is common sense is BACKWARDS!” thrill is an interesting element to focus on, since it’s become such a critical part of the reactionary “heterodox thinkers club” posturing, and entangled in conspiratorial thinking.

Chris Adams (acdha@code4lib.social)'s status on Tuesday, 23-Apr-2024 03:56:07 JST Chris Adams @marick I think Diamond has held up better – I haven’t seen accusations of the outright misrepresentation in service of right-wing tropes which characterizes Haidt’s big books - but I think you’re right to reconsider contrarianism. It’s such an easy path to a rush of self-satisfaction that I think it almost inevitably leads to errors over time as the writer relaxes their self-doubt – Nate Silver used to be a better writer when he had to worry about what an editor would say, too.

Brian Marick (marick@mstdn.social)'s status on Tuesday, 23-Apr-2024 03:56:08 JST Brian Marick Haidt is one of those “public intellectuals” whose later work makes me wonder if his earlier work that I liked was just as bad, but happened to tickle my biases or my innate contrarianism.
