     i think the current interpretation as that the whole thing was a disinfo campaign is likely i think i might go check https://skeptoid.com/episodes/4528 out for a 2016 retrospective

     i mean the alien roswell story was intentional disinfo to keep the public busy on something other than what they were actually doing imho
