@thomasfuchs Hmm, as someone who used floppy disks (mostly 3.5, but a fair number of 5 inch ones...) I don't think you are right about life expectancy.
Anecdotally I would say its a load of malarky.

Unfortunately that's one of the main reasons why computing moved away from floppy disks, because CDs and pendrives were much more resistant to careless handling. -
