    I am avain pleasantly surprised by japanese curtosy at the airport. Apparently right before the crew comes to the gate (puntually one minute before the hour) thry all line up in a row and give a big biw of respect to all thr customers waiting, including the pilots. Thry then smile and wave to anyo e who makes contact.

    Lovely culture to expiernce, i really do need to try to come here for a few months.

      Yea i was thinking about that, and know it is complex. Can you ever offend someone by bowing or bowing too deeply?

      @freemo i have heard of it sometimes happening but i think that people will mostly not say anything, or perhaps may offer recommendation on the appropriate way for a situation. fortunately, proper etiquette is not expected of non-japanese.

      @homelessjun so if a nonjapanese bows too low or when inappropriate, in a way that might be offensive from a japanese, how do you think a person might feel about that? Grateful an attempt was made to show respect, or annoyed but understanding?

      the reaction to non-japanese bowing depends on the person. the most negative impression may be a sense of being mocked. that is uncommon fortunately.

      i think non-japanese might simply nod instead of bow, at least at first.

      it is not a problem to ask someone for advice, but not a random stranger, of course.

      these videos explain bowing well...

      @homelessjun

      I generally like to go that extra mile to show respect when traveling. For most cultures that is as simple as learning their native words for please and thank you. For the japanese im not sure what that looks like yet, sounds like bowing, if done wrong can give a sense of disrespect rather than respect.

      Im not sure what is the safer route, bowing and getting it wrong or not bowing at all.

      perhaps for non-japanese not bowing is the safer thing, at least at first. it is best to not try too hard.

      doing one's best to learn culture, custom and etiquette is respected. in japan it is always good to think of others first. it helps to think about what to do in situations before they happen, too.

      i hope you enjoy your trip!

      @freemo Just about your surprise or impression: Just wanted to say that on a plane it's more of a fabricated / commercial thing so while no doubt it's in the culture (and probably you don't judge it all and know a certain amount of all this is tourism) it's not necessarily a representation of actual culture at the time...

      My stone / pan-face is a sign of my respect and a small courtesy - enjoy your flight :)
