I am going to stream games and demos for the https://www.commanderx16.com/ today (Sunday, April 7) at 3PM Eastern time.
The Commander X16 is a newly-released, 8-bit "dream computer" designed and built by YouTuber "the 8-Bit Guy".
The is the second stream of the Commander X16 and the content is going to be roughly the same as the first stream. The last stream was impromptu and multiple people were unhappy they missed it, so I'm doing a second one.
Location will be announced closer to broadcast time, it will be on seriousposter.
@sun Unfortunately he dropped the things we wanted from the implementation. Nice motherboard but I'd pass on it except to maybe hang on the wall as art. Totally screwed it up.
@sun You can't use it for anything portable. The original idea was the board would be compact enough to build something like a Model 100, which many asked for and I really need. He just didn't listen it's really a shame.
I mean... something like an Apple IIc with a flip-up LCD display would have been a decent compromise and there's no reason why that couldn't have happened.
But that motherboard is just too huge to really make it useful for anything.
@nom they said early on that the first set of boards were going to be developer motherboards at a premium price and this would be used to finance making smaller boards at a lower cost. I don't know if that will actually happen but they did lay out their plan. I don't think people are being fair to him.
@nom after spending a couple days doing more in-depth exploration of it, I am pretty impressed with it overall. I hope they release a smaller, cheaper version and you can re-evaluate it at that time if you like.
@sun The smaller boards are supposed to be under $100- he has said before it would all be in an FPGA.
Really all he needed to do is get rid of those slots and downsize the motherboard. I don't think he's stupid- so assume he's got blinders on. But we've been telling him this since the original feedback groups were created.
