     @engler @tedu Actually, forgot it's BSD so there's an History section:

     The mdoc language first appeared as a troff macro package in 4.4BSD.

     So ~1992 as 4.3BSD is 1986.

     While I'm at it man(7) in the description section says:

     standard formatting language for AT&T UNIX manual pages from 1979 to 1989.
