@woody wow that's serious, now tons of ISPs and smaller service providers with direct allocations will end up with worse routing (and possibly more expensive transit!) for all traffic to Google -

Yes, exactly. Email (SMTP) is up at OSI level 5, while this is IP routing, down at layer 3, but it's exactly analogous behavior.
