     @rossgrady @derek The “canary in a coal mine” analogy is apt. Insurance is a racket, but it is a great indicator of risk.

     There's some good context & info in this piece once you get past the ridiculous editorializing of its author, e.g. "undermining the ability of Americans to live where they choose."
     
     TL;DR: centuries of short-sightedness on the part of Americans (draining coastal wetlands; suppressing natural fire cycles) have finally resulted in risks so high & expensive that the actuaries at insurance companies are walking away entirely.
