@iro_miya@mk.absturztau.bebut it was actually 1,000+ Indian employees monitoring you as you walked through the store. It keeps happening every time. Every "AI" just turns out to secretly be sweatshop workers on the backend. Amazon is moving towards Dash Carts, a scanner and screen that’s embedded in your shopping cart, allowing you to checkout as you shop.So they are just switching to a regular tried and true shopping method that makes sense now. I know Marktkauf for example has had these shopping carts for years!
@iro_miya > According to The Information, 700 out of 1,000 Just Walk Out sales required human reviewers as of 2022. This widely missed Amazon’s internal goals of reaching less than 50 reviews per 1,000 sales.
So it was automatic and AI, it just did not work well enough.
@lain@lain.com ah fair enough! I think that at a 70% review rate, it's more of an AI assisting human workers and not actual automation but it's worth pointing out, I'll edit the post accordingly
@iro_miya I think they mean that the confidence was too low. I think it makes sense, they thought they'd need to do a lot of manual corrections for some time until their system worked automatically, but it didn't work out. I admit that the idea that there's a 1000 people somewhere in bangalore watching you fake-shoplift is very funny, though
@lain@lain.com I wonder if by that they mean that in 70% of the cases, their AI was wrong, or if they mean it just didn't have enough confidence 70% of the time which caused a human to be tasked to double-check.
@irth@toot.hackrc.dev@iro_miya@mk.absturztau.be Yeah handheld scanners are pretty common, but Marktkauf has these shopping carts which are quite interesting and basically the same thing that Amazon wants to do now.
