"According to senior journalist and 2021 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa, this trend is not a coincidence. She believes that leaders in information technology must be held accountable because the exploitation of lies, hatred, and shallow thinking on social media is at the core of today's democratic crises." ... imagine being subjected to these forces but having no control when a narrative is spun out of control. For example, in Malaysia, there were racist #TikTok vids threatening voters for voting against a certain political party. The platform was very slow to take them down. And then I remember what happened to the Rohingya thanks to #Facebook. Very little moderation resources are allocated for non-US countries. So, are these countries supposed to suffer the effects of polarisation more?
However, having a country/govt controlled social media is also problematic - where people's views can be stifled or suppressed based on who rules the reins of power. 3/3
@aulia haha no the AI journalist is American. I am not a fan of country owned social media for cough obvious reasons, seeing how our politicos love arresting people over social media posts. But if only they extend moderation to non-US countries too.
@liztai ugh, that sounds like an Indonesian politician. They’ve been advocating for our own social media network for years and I think they were still attempting or at least encouraging for one in the previous term. As for stifling and suppressing speech, they don’t need their own to do that, they already can with existing ones.
