Folks, I assure you if the greatest minds of our generation were working on the problem of how to live sustainably on a planet with 8B+ people, we'd get there. Our society is not organized to solve problems like that; instead, the brightest minds of our generation are employed to "make the line go up" and play math games with stock trading.

The problem is not "too many people." You got lied to by capitalists who sincerely believe that there is no other option but capitalism. Period.

And I was TRYING to have an important discussion out here, but now the front of my timeline is yelling at people pushing Malthusianism - you've played your role well, by bringing up a nazi con job and derailing the entire discussion. They've trained you to do this, and now you've done it yet again. You'll make good fascists some day.

@AnarchoNinaWrites Capitalist Realism is when Billions have to die so the status quo is preserved.

At the same time the same assholes yell about declining birth rates in the west.

@AnarchoNinaWrites I saw that and thought about wading in but I just didn't have the energy yesterday to deal with a bunch of liberals and so-called leftists eagerly praising eugenic wet dreams as a cure for what ails us, much less trying to explain how a precipitous decline in population is actually quite destabilizing to a society.

@AnarchoNinaWrites Shit i have to vent a bit:

Back when i used Reddit i met these assholes on r/collapse and they always told on themselves.

so the global birthrate in most nations has declined

      https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2021/06/birthrates-declining-globally-why-matters/

      CNN has this article:
      https://edition.cnn.com/2024/03/20/health/global-fertility-rates-lancet-study/index.html

Where we find out what kinda dogwhistle overpopulation is.

"Sub-Saharan Africa alone will account for 1 in every 2 children born on the planet by 2100."

Most of the time they will double down on the rhetoric. Fucking Ghouls.

@GNUmatic Right? Like, I'm not saying we SHOULD be trying to double the population, or that there is no upper maximum (although let's be real here, we don't have a society BUILT to study and create ways of sustainable living; if we did? Who knows what the max could be) but it's OFF topic, nazi propaganda. Capitalism, corporations, and rich people are why the fucking planet is burning. Not "overpopulation."

If the numbers are correct (and there seems little doubt about it) we could probably double or triple the population. All we would need to do is get rid of the few rich and super rich assholes who, according to research, are responsible for most of the ressources we burn. A private jet, a couple of cars, a property with a large pool, a few guest rooms and a golf course near the beach where the luxury yacht anchors, always ready to go? Well - you probably get the idea...

On average, the praised, developed countries spend pretty much all of it, but even within those countries it makes a huge difference if you're wealthy or not.

We - or more precisely - the rich are overshooting. They would need a third Earth and it still wouldn't be sustainable. It's just telling if anybody comes along and blames "the people". What people? The peasants in Africa or wherever else who still live a sustainable life without a car and whatnot? Likely not.

More specifically it's capitalism or more broadly our strange obsession with private property. It's not just the rich. They need lots of folks just to keep it that way. Police, a military, Corp. lawyers, advertisers, bureaucrats and then pretty much all of management. All the #bullshitjobs, for short. Add second order bullshit jobs needed to support them with actual goods and services and you get the gravity of the issue. It's hilarious just how wasteful that has become.
