    I’m convinced that people don’t dislike AI so much as they dislike AI + The Cloud.

    Gamers have been running what is now known as “AI” on their local PCs for a long, long time. It’s partially why Nvidia has become the number one manufacturer for AI cards. Nobody batted an eye until The Cloud became the go-to manner for accessing LLMs and image generation.

    And to be honest, The Cloud sucks for AI. It’s a lot of work for terrible results—often censored to fulfil corporate goals as well.

    In fact, I’m convinced that all this fear-mongering over AI is an attempt to make it illegal for us to run it on our desktops.

    Why, if we did that, civilization would end! It’s better to give Open AI your money so that no one haphazardly triggers the apocalypse.

      @atomicpoet Oh yes, definitely. But governments do have the resources to set up their own AI without the public cloud as well, so I do want to distinguish between AI that you use for yourself, and AI that is used to rule over you.

      The Dutch tax authorities used AI to identify fraud. It went exactly how you'd expect it'd go, and this was before cloud AI became popular.

      @jornane True, but this is also relevant regarding The Cloud since it provides scale for those policy decisions to thrive.

      @atomicpoet AI + Policy decisions is also a problem, no matter where the AI runs.

      AI is inherently racist and sexist, so when it gets a say about anyone’s life, that’s bad.

      So, how did it go?

      @jornane @atomicpoet ok, that's not accurate.
      AI is made to imitate humans, so it acts in imitation with the racism and sexism of humans, even when they're not supposed to/the humans being imitated don't realize what they're doing.
      which means that such behavior comes from an external source, thus: not inherent.
