   @twilliability @nf3xn Hashtags will not be sent to your server unless someone on your server follows the account making the posts.

   Technically following a tag is a mechanism for filtering the local firehose rather than following in any ActivityPub sense.

     @nf3xn The comment by @twilliability says "To me following accounts feels more natural, and maybe easier to do in many clients (including the one I use lol). Also I'm not 100% hashtags are part of ActivityPub itself; they might be a Mastodon-specific addon".

     I was guessing that means you suggested that entries from an RSS feed could be posted to a hashtag for that feed instead of from an account for that feed.
