     @lanodan Wasn't that always a thing ? I think I had it since Wine 8, but maybe it required some configuration before.

     @allison @pernia It's both X11 and Wayland not mapping to Windows APIs, IIRC that's been shown at latest XDC (X Developer Conference) by 2 presenters, first the Wine-Wayland porter and then an Wine-X11 maintainer.
     
     And IIRC wabi (not wine but prior art of win32 on unix) was exclusively in a virtual desktop.

     @lanodan @pernia so was win4lin, anyway, wayland has a far worse time of it because no absolute positioning which among other things interferes with mdi applications

     @allison @pernia Which IIRC is getting an extension so could be available on some compositors (likely only the floating/stacking ones).
     
     Meanwhile on X11 side it's extensions like fullscreen/EWMH being things that not everyone implements either or even honors well enough after all those years. (in fact I've carried the virtual desktop setting in wine across several X11 WMs and new wineprefixes)

     @lanodan @pernia They (wlroots presumably) actually defined a protocol for that? The last thing I remember was Wayland core devs stonewalling endlessly over it, and this was relatively recently (within the past year or so)
