    What is and isn't acceptable for businesses to do in the #Fediverse?

    Lots of opinions, many strongly held. The fact of the matter, of course, is that businesses *are* connecting to the Fediverse, from news organizations to Meta and everything in between.

    Would be useful to come up with a set of acceptable things to do for businesses and unacceptable ones. Or maybe a scale.

    I want to run a #FediForum session on this next week, and brainstorm with you all.

      @J12t @katanova @tchambers I honestly think we need to get away from these monolithic ideas of single-purpose networks. The ideal fediverse is small pieces loosely joined. The protocol allows (but doesn’t ensure) connectivity but doesn’t dictate how that should operate. As a (co-op) business person I’d like a network that augments our activities, both commercial and social. As an individual I want something quite different and nebulous. I’m sure we can have both, and more.

      @katanova I sympathize with your answer, but I think as we all know from experience, many people here will come up with different answers. A business that runs their own instance (for example) may end up not being able to connect to anything because they didn't understand what the vocal majority wanted. It would be nice to come up with some kind of baseline so that doesn't need to happen.

      @J12t
      The simple answer is that it's up to individual instance operators, and from there, it's up to other instance operators to decide whether to federate with instances that host businesses.

      Even further, this can be a choice of whether to support/platform businesses depending on whether they're operated ethically.

      It used to be that a businesses' reputation was based on its community connections.

      @mike@thecanadian.social @J12t Totally. A fantastic marketer and brand strategist tole me recently that "Advertising is disruptive. Marketing is a service."

      Brands who are respectful and have something genuinely interesting to say to potential customers will thrive in the fediverse. All others will not.

      @J12t I think it's pretty simple. I think companies need to approach the fediverse as a tool for outreach as opposed to promotion. Use it as a tool to advocate for your customers and support their success.
