@matthew@Extelec I think making Linux trendy by showing off some sizzle would be a good way to boost that number. The biggest roadblock is familiarity with computers; even something as simple as removing the traditional start menu caused extreme anxiety in people (rightfully so to some extent). I have some ideas, which of course have their own flaws that could be solved but community (especially if it increases in market share). >Come up with a "Unified GUI" standard across Linux and pitch it as a recommended part of every distro. Getting people to agree on what this looks like would be extremely challenging, if not impossible, assuming people would even be okay with the idea. I do think having the simplicity of Joe Sixpack sitting down and saying "I know what this is" regardless of what device he uses will to much further than people realize.
@matthew@Extelec I'm still not on Linux, although I haven't dug my old Thinkpad out of storage. Is Cinnamon desktop a utility/program or built into distros?
We almost have this with the Cinnamon desktop, as the start menu, window controls and shortcut keys are pretty much the same as what regular people loved and were familiar with on Windows XP and Windows 7.
I really do think it is a mindset issue and that no matter how hard you try, people go with what everyone else is using. If that's Windows, then that is what they use.
It is an unthinking mentality.
I do believe that independent video creators have done immense service in challenging this mentality as now it is somewhat likely that people have seen at least some tech videos of people using or recommending alternatives to Microsoft Windows, most prominently Linux.
So the tide is changing... just frustrating slow for me as I have been using Linux for 20 years now.
@matthew Just would like to mention that maybe not only about the interface. Let's say, as for today if you google something about fix/tune for linux, several of the first results will be "type this in the terminal" or "type 'lsblk' and choose the proper device (not partition)"
