   Really dark pattern at Walmart checkout I bet most folks who aren't overpoliced don't even notice: asking if you want printed or texted receipt.

     See, Walmart has this thing of demanding you show your receipt and let them search you if you're the wrong sort of shopper.

     Oops, no paper receipt?

     Now the person accusing you of shoplifting is holding your phone.

     It's a vector for harassing people they want to accuse of shoplifting and putting them in a severe power differential at a moment that's already terrifying.

     @dalias Also paper trail means they can't modify it later on, or you know… loose your documents (receipts being important here to return products, without that even being a warranty).

     @dalias Which also makes me feel like vendors will try to shove paperless warranties on people, even though essentially no one manages to keep digital documents for several years.

     @lanodan Yep. There's a giant gap in consumer protection all around this. We desperately need consumer protection regulation that documents do not count as delivered to someone if you give them a link, only if you transmit the actual document contents where they asked you to.
