     @mcnado @thomasfuchs I've basically never had trouble knowing what gear I'm in purely by feel with the traditional P-R-N-D automatic gear selectors or a four on the floor. You typically hear about those sorts of events in relation to LOLs with dementia and such or people on drugs/alcohol.

     The car industry is inventing whole new classes of safety issue with electronic non-traditional ways of selecting and indicating the gear, particularly those that do not have haptic, affirmative touch feedback.

     Tesla, in particular, is exceedingly bad on this front, with many issues created by their touch screen oriented approach to virtually all aspects of systems control.
